February 14th, 2015…. some say it is arbitrary, but it is definitely a day that reminds us to think….what is love, actually?
Here are a few thoughts of mine on the matter:
When we talk about love, we begin to understand that we "love" many different things from our spouse, to our job, to coffee.
We as a family, we choose to look at love as a CHOICE! A choice we make everyday….an action, not a feeling. LOVE makes us feel amazing, but love can also bring sadness and hurt. In a marriage relationship couples feel both. Even in sibling and family relationships, we experience both.
In our 4 1/2 years of marriage, we have found that through the hard parts our action to love has brought us through the hard times. Even when our utter foundations are rocked and cracked, our choice to LOVE each other has outweighed it all.
I love, LOVE!!! I am thankful for LOVE! I am faithful to LOVE!!!
I believe the love we feel on earth changes and sways, but the best love is the love we have from our God! That is a love I aspire to learn…. a love that moves mountains….a love that brings differences together…..a love that truly means "I love you."
To my husband,
"Adam, I love you today more than I did yesterday. Today I woke up next to you, thanked God for you, and choose to love you and I'll do the same tomorrow!" "I love you!"
Plug: The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman
This book has been our GO-TO study to check where our marriage is and learn to love intentionally everyday! HIGHLY recommend this read for couples, families, etc…. GREAT BOOK!!!

4 years and beyond!!!!!!
Today (July 14th, 2014) we celebrate our 4 year anniversary! It is hard to believe that we've been married that long and together almost 6 1/2 years. WOW!!!
We have spent the day reminiscing about our past anniversaries and the many fun things we have done. Everyone says that life goes by fast, and it does, but maybe that is because we forget to A) live in the moment and B) look back at the life you have shared together. So that is exactly what we are going to do today!
Anniversary countdown:
#1) Adam and I spent that week in Illinois at my parent's farm and enjoyed a wonderful meal at Martini's and had prime rib, chicken lip salads, and a chocolate martini….with a lovely red wine. We then went and spent that weekend in Nauvoo and toured a few wineries and then stayed at a very unique bed and breakfast for the night.
#2) We ended up randomly taking a trip to Herman and spent the day walking around the town, wine tasting, and eating amazing food including a lobster bisque that will turn any vegetarian into a lobster lover!
#3) This year was simple…..dinner at Macaroni Grill, our favorite place in Columbia. We shared a special bottle of wine and had it signed and placed on their wall.
#4) Tonight we will do much the same as #3. We spent the day working and after bible study and house viewing we will head to Macaroni Grill and enjoy a beautiful night of wine and talking. We might even snag a quiet walk before bed! I can't imagine anything better!
So, as you can see our anniversary celebrations have become less and less exaggerated as the years have gone by, but that is how we like it. Just the 2 of us…being us!
We have shared so many memories together over our 6 1/2 years of being together including travels to Hawaii, Italy, Romania, Greece, Turkey, and parts of the U. S. To add to the list we've shared our cousins and siblings weddings, family moving into new homes, and the excitement and hardship of medical school, graduate school, and job searching/creating/developing. I'd say we've done a lot and have been blessed with much!
I can happily say that our wedding day 4 years ago was a wonderful and beautiful day, but everyday that follows I fall more and more in love with this man. My favorite man! The man that God has shared with me!
Happy Anniversary to my husband, Adam!
I love you,
Your Wife, Kristin Noel

What is Driving Your Home?
Week 7 focused our hearts and minds on Our Ministries. Those in and out of the home.
As a wife and potential mother in the future, it was important for me this week to focus on my role, where my ministry is, where it should be, and how this might change in the future.
{Week 7 Challenge}: Pray that God lays on our hearts people we can minister too. Then think of some practical ways that we can bless them.
{Week 7 Memory Verse}:

{Week 7 Memory Verse}:
{Week 7 Statement}: This week I'm going to be intentionally focused on where and how I am ministering.
{Week 7 Lessons}:
- invest your time and talents where they will make an eternal difference (1Peter 4: 9-10)
- invest in people
- use our gifts for others - not to please ourselves
- my first priority for ministry is in my home (Proverbs 31:27)
- be intentional about ministering in my home - attentive to their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness
- devote time and energy to help those around you (1 Tim 5: 10)
- do not hesitate to offer hospitality (Romans 12:13)
- do not entertain, but practice hospitality
- build your home on the foundation of God's love (Proverbs 14:1)

When serving ----> do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God will be praised through Jesus Christ!
{How to use our abilities}
- as God directs
- to help others
- see Jesus in our service - "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me" (Matthew 25: 40)
{Characteristics of a faithful woman}

- offer food for nourishment
- be a listening ear
- show genuine acceptance and support
*Hospitality is not about inviting people into our perfect homes; it is about inviting people into our imperfect hearts!*
{Characteristics a Godly home should embody}
- be a sanctuary for our husbands and children
- be safe from worldly seductions and temptations
- where the weary find rest
- where the sad find comfort
- environment where character is formed
- be joyful
- be peaceful
- be filled with love!
During this week, Adam and I took time discussing practical ways to build our home on God's foundation and maintain it with Christ as the center. We spent time answering this question: "What is driving our home?" The discuss that developed from this question was profound and enlightening for our family. I encourage you; whether married, married with kids, or single to answer this question honestly. We found it to be pivotal for our relationship and how we build our home and will continue to build our home as it grows and changes.
"What is driving your home?"
"Are you building up your home or tearing it down?
"What are some practical ways to make Jesus the center of your home?"
{Quote}
"Home is the true wife's kingdom. There, first of all places, she must be strong and beautiful. She may touch life outside in many ways, if she can do it without slighting the duties that are hers within her own doors. These are hers, and no other one's." - J.R. Miller
{Prayer}
"I pray for each of you, that you be encouraged to minister using the gifts God has given you, to serve others, please God, and grow closer to him. I pray for your homes, that you let God lead them and take time to assess what is driving your home, your schedules, your meals, your free time. I pray you grow closer to God with each passing second and that your ministries inside and outside the home are blessed and prosperous in showing and sharing love." - Amen

Preparation for the Future
Week 6 was about children.....hope for the future!
I found this to be an enlightening week full of thoughts and ideas to store up and consider.
{Week 6 Challenge} Spend time with children around you and intentionally make a point to talk about the praise worthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done.
{Week 6 Memory Verse}
{Week 6 Statement} "This week I will be intentionally focused on my example and discussions with the children in my life."
{Week 6 Lessons}:
Action steps to living with God everyday and being an example for the children around us:
This week I found myself focusing on these lessons in 2 ways: 1) preparing if the day comes when God calls us to have children, and 2) in the present with the children and families I interact with daily. Although it might not always be appropriate to sit down and talk about Jesus, specifically in a school setting or during therapy, but I can ALWAYS show God's love through my service and interaction with them. I found myself spending more time contemplating how I would speak to the children and how I would engage with them in a loving way to intentionally show them God's love and encourage them to trust me and therefore learn to trust God. This is a huge responsibility as a therapist and teacher, one that I do not take lightly and take even more intentionally after this week's study. I also spent a fair amount of time thinking and mostly praying about the future. Praying for God's timing, praying that I will have what it takes, that if we are called to raise children that we do it right, that we lead them to God and that we show His love. This week's recap questions Adam and I actually went through together and these are the points we came up with--->
How do we plan on incorporating God into our everyday life when/if we do have children:
This was an extremely informative and thought provoking week of study. One I am thankful I worked through. One final note that Adam actually mentioned while we were discussing the recap questions together. We were discussing the importance of preparing ourselves for God's calling and he said:
"Well, it's just like if you were to raise bilingual children. You can't learn the language along with them, it has to be something you already know and live." - A
This was a profound statement to me. God is a language, He is that essential and we can't begin to think that we can teach our children God if we don't already know Him. We are preparing NOW for God's calling. Thankful for my husband and thankful for this week of study!
{Prayer} "I pray for each of you, for your influence on children. I pray that you first look to God for guidance and then lead little ones. I pray your heart is open to the children around you and that you recognize that they are 1st God's children. You have been honored to raise them and influence them, they are a blessing. I pray you own this blessing and take responsibility for it by showing them the radical forgiveness and love God has for you. Amen." - K

Thoughts on marriage......
Marriage is a blessing ......this we know, but what happens when it's work?
As little girls we watch Disney movies of Cinderella, Jasmine, and Ariel as they find their prince charming. We are surrounded with this fantasy of lust. When looking back at these stories they never tell much about the marriage, but rather the dating, courtship, engagement, and our favorite part....the wedding. What about the most exciting part......the marriage! O yea..... "and they lived happily ever after."
After much discussion with my husband we decided that marriage would make a much less interesting movie....and a long one! Marriage is tough work at times and most people don't go to movies to see reality, but to see fantasy.
Take Ariel from The Little Mermaid. She wants something else, a life different than what she has and she sells her voice to find it. This infatuation with 'prince charming' is what we call LUST! This is not love. The story turns and she eventually finds her voice in her prince charming......but in real life we don't find our voice in our spouse. In fact, we get married and find we now SHARE a voice and can't always have our way and must compromise and spend more time listening and less time speaking. Bet you didn't expect that huh, Ariel?
The truth is that LOVE is not something that happens.....it is work! Lust happens without our control, but LOVE is a choice! When talking with our pastor before we got married, he said one thing to us that has stuck....."love is a verb, it is an action!" With love being an action, that implies that we have the choice to love! In a marriage love doesn't just happen, it takes a conscious choice everyday to cultivate and grow love in your marriage. It is at times the hardest thing you will do in the day, but it is also the most important and can be the most rewarding!
What an honor to have your husband/wife say to you "I choose to love you today" and what an honor for your spouse to hear you say "I choose to love you today"......day after day! The choice to love is not the same choice to like or to agree. Most days you will have different opinions on events in your life: where you want to live, how the laundry is done, where to spend holidays, what days to take off at holidays, how and when to cook dinner, who cleans, how the chores are divided or not divided, and who makes the bed....the list goes on and on. The most important way to handle disagreements is not to think of you against your spouse on these issues, but you and your spouse against the event/situation. When we begin to think as a single entity, the day to day things are more doable.....that doesn't mean they are easy, but it is a way to choose to cultivate love.
For many independent people, marriage is a shock. Remember marriage is a choice.....just as love is a choice! A choice you make and a choice you continue to make everyday. Marriage is hard work, but it is worth it. The stories of couples who have gone through crisis, infidelity, the loss of a child, the torture of bankruptcy, the loss of a house or job.....the couples that choose to keep their marriage are the stronger for it. Lust is a wonderful and fleeting emotion, but the contentment and joy that is grown in a marriage is so much better than the fleeting feeling of lust.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on marriage....feel free to comment below with your thoughts!
Are you having trouble understanding your marriage whether you are a newlywed, been married a few years, or married for many years......I encourage you to write a note to yourself (a post-it on the bathroom mirror works perfect) that says "Choose to love" and look at it each morning this week!
We also rely heavily on The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman to help understand how we love and how our spouse receives and gives love! Highly recommend it!
One last note: I like to run and on my run yesterday I was reminded how similar a marriage is to a run. The beginning is like ecstasy (lust) you run and think you could run forever....you are all smiles and feel like nothing could be more perfect. Then the middle of the run comes and you are looking back trying to remember that ecstatic feeling and loosing it with every bound of your foot.......it is now a choice to continue.....as you put just a bit more effort to focus your mind away from the torture, but before long it hits you again........and you stop.
Take a big breath and think to yourself "do I continue or walk the rest of the way home?" Finally, you choose to continue at a much slower speed up the hills with some rest on the downhills, but then something happens when you realize you are almost over the hill......you finally stop at your endpoint and walk it out.......with a feeling that is not quite as high as the ecstasy in the beginning, but a feeling of accomplishment, a feeling of inner peace, a feeling of contentment......much like the feeling of love in a marriage that has been cultivated and purposefully grown.
I pray this blurb inspires you to choose to love your spouse. Remember, a marriage is not always fun or easy, but it can be the most joyful part of your life if you work at it!
*We are all in this together, so please feel free to drop us a note if you would like prayers for your marriage!
Blessings,
Kristin
